GLORIOUS GIBRALTAR

Gibraltar Cruise: Best Cruises to Gibraltar | Celebrity Cruises

Welcome to the weekly Marvellous Mediterranean Sea Blog!

As some of you know my family and I are avid cruisers. Every week I will be showing you my family's favourite Mediterranean port and the activities you can do during your short time visiting.

This week is my dad's favourite - Gibraltar!

With the cruise ship usually only docking for 8-9 hours, passengers are limited with time to explore the port. However, Gibraltar is a small country and therefore leaves plenty time to be a tourist for the day!

In Gibraltar one of the most popular sightseeing attractions is The Rock of Gibraltar. It is well-known for being the home of nearly 300 monkeys! The cable car is the quickest and easiest way to get to the top of the rock, taking just 6 minutes. If walking is your thing then the Mediterranean Steps is an unforgettable trek up to the peak of The Rock, which would take visitors around 3-4 hours!

A nature reserve ticket is €13, and this gives you access to all areas when you get to the top of The Rock as there are many attractions for you to enjoy. My dad and I are very jealous as we haven't tried this attraction out yet! It's called the Skywalk, it is a glass platform 340 metres above sea level, which offers 360° views over Gibraltar!

If you are into history then this next attraction is for you. St. Michael's Cave is another well-known attraction on top of The Rock. During WWII the cave was prepared as an emergency hospital but was never used as such. The cave is now open to visitors and it makes a unique auditorium for concerts, ballet and drama. There are also WWII tunnels which you can only see if you are part of a guided tour which is where Churchill worked in 1941.

In Gibraltar the Grand Casemates Square is in the heart of the town in what used to be the military barracks and is now the main square in which you can eat and drink at many restaurants, bars and food stalls. This is on the way back to the cruise which is the perfect opportunity to stop for a refreshment or a bite to eat!

I hope you enjoyed reading my first weekly blog! Join me next week to hear about my Mum's favourite port!
